I am so passionate about working with people who experience anxiety. Why?
Because I get to see what can happen when someone who has spent years feeling held back by worry, fear or self-doubt starts to realise that change really is possible.
Anxiety can shrink your world.
It can make social situations feel exhausting. You might overthink conversations, worry about what people think of you or rehearse every possible outcome before you leave the house.
You might say no to plans because it feels easier than dealing with the worry.
You might avoid trying something new because your brain immediately gives you all the reasons it could go wrong.
You might find yourself constantly thinking ahead, imagining the worst-case scenario, checking, analysing and worrying, even when everything is actually okay.
And perhaps the most frustrating part? You know you want to feel differently, but you don't know how to get there.
You can change. Neuroscience proves it!
It doesn't matter how old you are. It doesn't matter how long you've experienced anxiety. Your brain is capable of learning new patterns throughout your life.
Change isn't necessarily easy. In fact, most things that are truly worth doing require some effort and commitment.
But imagine what that effort could give you.
Imagine feeling happier and more carefree.
Imagine being able to relax in social situations rather than constantly monitoring yourself.
Imagine saying yes to a plan without spending hours worrying about it first.
Imagine booking the holiday, taking the trip, trying something new or simply enjoying an ordinary day without those familiar feelings pulling you back.
Imagine living the life you actually want to live.
One of the things I find fascinating about the brain is its desire to predict what is going to happen.
When we've experienced anxiety and worry for a long time, those thought patterns become familiar. The brain becomes very good at travelling down the same well-worn path:
What if...?
What could go wrong?
What if they think...?
I'd better not...
This feels dangerous.
What's the worst that could happen?
The brain isn't necessarily trying to make you miserable. It's trying to protect you by predicting potential threats.
And the more often you travel that path, the easier it becomes to take it.
But here's the really exciting bit:
We can create new paths.
We can learn to respond differently. We can teach the brain that not every thought is a warning, not every situation is a threat and not every uncomfortable feeling needs to be avoided.
That's one of the reasons I love hypnotherapy.
It can help you step out of those familiar patterns and begin creating new ones... calmer, more positive and more helpful ways of thinking and responding.
We also need to think about what we're feeding our brains every day.
And, spoiler alert...
Endless scrolling is not helping your anxiety!!!
Constant notifications, bad news, comparison, information overload and an endless stream of things designed to grab your attention can leave your brain feeling overstimulated and constantly on alert.
Your brain needs downtime too.
It needs time to relax.
Time to process.
Time to organise all that mental clutter.
Time to reflect.
Time to plan for the future without automatically imagining everything going wrong.
And it needs positive experiences... moments of calm, connection, movement, laughter, achievement and enjoyment.
Learning to notice the positives can be particularly powerful on the days when they seem almost non-existent.
You don't have to pretend everything is wonderful.
You simply start teaching your brain to notice that there is more than the threat.
Perhaps anxiety has been part of your life for years.
Perhaps you've simply reached the point where you're tired of it making decisions for you.
Either way, you are not stuck.
You can learn new ways of thinking. You can learn to relax. You can build confidence. You can change the patterns that no longer serve you.
And imagine what might be waiting on the other side of that work.
More freedom.
More confidence.
More spontaneity.
More happiness.
And perhaps, most importantly, the feeling that you are living your life rather than organising your life around anxiety.
