🤯The Truth About Pushing Through: Why Rest Isn’t Optional

The Guilt We Carry: When “Keeping Going” Becomes the Thing That Breaks Us
In the wellness world, we’re brilliant at reminding others to rest, reset and listen to their bodies… yet we’re often the last ones to follow that advice ourselves. There’s a silent pressure many of us feel, in every walk of life, in any job... a push to keep showing up, keep supporting, keep delivering value, keep smiling because we never want to let anyone down.
And so we keep going.
And going.
And going.
Until, eventually, our bodies say no more.
This past week, mine did exactly that. I wasn’t feeling right, I knew something was off, but I ignored the signs and this was quite difficult to do seeing as my voice was the first thing to go! But I didn’t want to fall behind. I didn’t want to disappoint people. I told myself I’d rest later, but “later” never came.
Illness has a way of forcing what we refuse to give ourselves: stillness and rest.
And in that stillness, things become very clear.
As I’ve been unwell, I’ve been given unexpected space to pause, properly pause, and reflect on what’s actually important. Without the constant busy-ness, without the noise, without the frantic forward motion, I’ve been able to see my own wellbeing for what it is: non-negotiable. And I know this... I say it to others all the time, but something keeps telling us we'll be fine if we just keep going. But without our health, what do we truly have?
And interestingly, in the slowdown came clarity.
Ideas.
Realisations.
A sense of direction that’s been buried under the constant doing.
Sometimes we miss the key parts of our business, our purpose, and our lives because we’re moving too fast to notice them. When you’re always pushing, you lose sight of why you’re pushing in the first place.
So here’s the reminder — for me, for you, for anyone in the helping professions:
Pause.
Rest.
Reflect.
Let your body lead for once.
Ask yourself:
Why am I doing this? What am I aiming for? What actually matters to me, not to others, but to me?
The answers will be different for everyone, but the common thread is this:
You can’t pour from an empty cup, no matter how dedicated, passionate or caring you are.
Sometimes stepping back isn’t a setback at all, it’s the only way to step forward with intention, health and purpose.
Look after yourselves, lovely people. Christmas is coming and the festive season generally brings with it a lot of busyness, but remember your health!
Speak soon,
Jo xxx
