Self-Care This Summer: What Will You Keep Consistent?

Summer has a way of changing our routines.

For some, it's a season of slower mornings, holidays, family adventures and more freedom.

For others, it can feel anything but relaxing. The children are home, routines disappear, work carries on, the house is busier and finding five minutes to yourself suddenly feels impossible.

Whatever your summer looks like this year, I'd like to ask you one question:

What will you choose to keep consistent?

Not because you have to ... but because looking after yourself allows you to show up as the very best version of you.

Self-care isn't selfish...

We recently talked about how we often think of self-care as bubble baths, spa days and candles.

Whilst those things can be lovely, real self-care is often much simpler.

It's choosing the habits that help your brain and body function at their best.

Every time you move your body, you stimulate the release of chemicals that support your mental wellbeing.

Exercise increases endorphins, often called our "feel-good" hormones. It boosts serotonin, helping to regulate mood and dopamine, which supports motivation and gives us that satisfying sense of achievement. Regular movement also helps reduce cortisol, our main stress hormone.

At the same time, movement increases blood flow to the brain, supporting memory, concentration and clear thinking.

It's no coincidence that after a workout, a walk or a yoga session, life often feels a little more manageable.

You're not imagining it.

Your brain is literally working differently.

When you prioritise your own wellbeing, you're not taking something away from your family or those around you.

You're giving them the calmest, strongest and most patient version of yourself.

Summer doesn't have to mean stopping.

One of the biggest traps we fall into is thinking everything has to be all or nothing.

"I'm away this week."

"The children are off."

"I've missed a few workouts."

"I'll start again in September."

But your body doesn't know what month it is. It simply responds to what you do consistently. So you can adapt to fit with your summer life:

Maybe your usual three strength sessions become two.

Perhaps your hour-long workout becomes twenty minutes.

Maybe you swap the gym for resistance bands in the garden or a brisk walk before everyone else wakes up.

It all counts. Consistency will always beat perfection.

If summer feels challenging...

Some people genuinely find summer hard.

Children home all day.

Juggling childcare.

Looking after relatives.

Working or staying at home whilst everyone else seems to be on holiday.

Feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to make everything magical.

If this sounds familiar, ask yourself:

What do I need today to help me feel like me?

Maybe it's ten quiet minutes with a coffee.

A walk around the block.

A yoga class.

A strength workout.

Five minutes of deep breathing before the house wakes up.

Looking after yourself isn't something to squeeze in if you have time.

It helps create the energy, patience and resilience you need for everything else.

If summer feels easier...

Maybe this is your chance to enjoy moving even more.

Long walks.

Morning workouts.

Trying something new.

Exploring somewhere different.

Taking your resistance band on holiday.

Exercising outdoors.

Movement doesn't have to be something you "fit in."

It can become part of the joy of the season.

Stay present.

We spend so much of life thinking about what's next. But happiness is rarely found in constantly looking ahead.

This summer, try to notice what's happening right now and it can be super simple!

The sunshine on your face... fresh air... satisfaction after a workout... a cup of tea in the garden... an evening walk.

These moments may seem ordinary, but they're often the ones we remember most.

My challenge for you.

This summer, don't aim for perfection. Aim for consistency.

Keep one or two habits that help you feel strong and calm.

Move because it helps your body. Exercise because it helps your mind. Rest when you need to. Laugh often.

You will show up better for those around you by taking care of yourself. So, every time you choose to look after yourself, you're also looking after the people who matter most to you.
