😧Just Start: Why Waiting for the Perfect Time Is Holding You Back

Jo Steele | JUN 18

Just Start! (Yes, I am using my bossy voice!)

If you're a woman in midlife, chances are your to-do list is never-ending.

There are children to look after, ageing parents to support, jobs around the house that seem to multiply overnight, work demands that feel busier than ever and all of this while navigating some pretty significant changes in your own body.

Then someone tells you that you should be strength training.

Seriously?

The thought of fitting a fitness routine into an already overflowing schedule can feel completely impossible.

And yet, I hear the same things all the time:

"I'm waiting for things to settle down."

"I just need to get through the school holidays."

"Work is manic right now. I'll start when things calm down."

"I've got too much on at the moment."

The problem is that life rarely settles down.

That thing you're waiting to pass is usually replaced by another thing. Then another. Before you know it, six months have gone by and you're still telling yourself you'll start next week.

Meanwhile, your health remains at the bottom of the list.

The Neuroscience of Starting

Here's something fascinating that neuroscience teaches us:

Motivation follows action.

Most people believe they need to feel motivated before they start exercising.

In reality, it works the other way around.

We take action first. Then motivation grows.

Your brain loves certainty. When there's something important you know you should be doing, but you keep putting it off, your brain doesn't simply forget about it.

It's sitting there in the background.

The unfinished task creates mental load. It occupies space. It contributes to stress.

You know you want to move more.

You know you want to get stronger.

You know you want to look after your future health.

But every time you don't show up for yourself, it can create feelings of guilt, frustration and disappointment.

That stress bucket starts filling faster than you realise.

What Happens When You Start?

It's unlikely that you'll find more time.

The magic is simply in starting.

Because once you begin moving consistently, something interesting happens.

You start feeling better.

You feel stronger.

Your energy improves.

Your mind feels clearer.

You release those feel-good chemicals that help improve mood and reduce stress.

You become more productive, more focused and often more effective with the time you do have.

The very thing you thought you didn't have time for starts helping you manage everything else more effectively.

You Do Have Time For Something

Now, before you tell me you genuinely don't have time, let me be clear.

I'm not judging. Life is busy. We can't do it all. So...

FACT: We all make choices about what we prioritise.

If exercise isn't important to you right now, that's absolutely fine.

But if it's constantly sitting in the back of your mind...

If you keep thinking, "I really should do something..."

Then perhaps it's time to stop waiting.

You don't need an hour, the perfect space, the right trainers or best sports bra.

You just need to start.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

One workout.

One walk.

Consistency Beats Perfection

The clients I work with aren't people with endless free time.

In fact, they're mostly very busy professionals.

They're parents.

They're carers.

They're navigating the same challenges you're facing.

The difference is that they made a decision to prioritise their health now and for the future.

Because this is what matters most to them.

And yes, building habits takes commitment.

There will be days you don't feel like it.

Days when motivation disappears.

Days when the sofa looks far more appealing.

That's normal.

Take your rest days.

Enjoy your holidays.

Life happens.... But don't quit. Hop straight back in.

Consistency isn't about being perfect. It's about keeping going.

Your Future Self Is Waiting

I've never met someone who regretted getting stronger.

I've never heard anyone say they wished they hadn't looked after their muscles, bones, confidence, energy levels or long-term health.

But I have met many people who wish they'd started sooner.

So if you've been waiting for the perfect moment, consider this your reminder:

The perfect moment probably isn't coming.

Start now.

Start small.

Just start.

Your body will thank you for it.

And if you need a little kickstart, that's exactly why I've created the Summer Fit Challenge. It's completely FREE!
