😧Your Body Isn't Too Old... It Might Just Need Challenging Again

Jo Steele | JUN 25

Ageing or Just Deconditioned?

"I can't do that anymore now I'm getting older."

It's something I hear all the time.

Women in their 40s, 50s and 60s often put aches, pains, stiffness, poor balance, reduced strength and difficulty with certain movements down to age.

But what if it isn't age?

What if it's deconditioning?

There's a big difference.

As we age, our bodies do change. We don't recover quite as quickly, we may need a little more strength training, mobility work and rest than we did in our twenties. But the dramatic decline many people expect simply isn't inevitable.

In fact, research suggests that many of the physical losses we associate with ageing are actually the result of inactivity rather than age itself.

Think about it.

If you stop doing something, you become less able to do it.

If you stop reaching overhead, your shoulders become stiffer.

If you stop getting up and down from the floor, it becomes harder.

If you stop challenging your balance, your balance declines.

If you stop moving quickly, your body forgets how.

As we get older, life changes and the need to do a lot of these movements reduces. Therefore, unless we intentionally add it into our lives, we stop doing them. We might walk every day, which is fantastic BTW... so many health benefits right there. But it doesn't encourage balance, twists, agility, power moves and movement through all ranges of motion. It's predictable and steady. Great for cortisol levels, but it's not keeping your body fully capable and conditioned.

The body is incredibly adaptable. It responds to the demands placed upon it.

The problem is that it also adapts when those demands disappear.

Use it or lose it isn't just a saying. It's how the body works.

Movement Creates Capability

Many people believe they need to become fitter before they start exercising.

The reality is the opposite.

Exercise is what creates fitness.

Movement creates mobility.

Strength training creates strength.

Balance practice creates balance.

The more we challenge our bodies appropriately, the more capable they become. They can RELEARN all of that stuff we thought 'ageing' had taken from us!

And here's the really exciting part...

You can often become stronger, fitter and more capable in your 50s and 60s than you were in your 40s.

I've seen it happen countless times.

Women who couldn't get down onto the floor confidently now move with ease.

Women who thought they had "bad knees" are hiking hills.

Women who believed they had lost their strength are lifting weights they never imagined possible.

They learned how to condition their body and train it in a way that will enhance future health and independence.

Consistency Beats Motivation

The secret is consistency.

It's showing up even when you don't particularly feel like it.

It's making movement part of your life in the same way that brushing your teeth is part of your life.

Non-negotiable. Because you know how much better you feel when you do.

Something magical happens when movement becomes a habit rather than thinking of it as another job to do.

You do it without thinking about it. You get it done because you know it makes you feel better.

Your body feels stronger.

Your balance improves.

Your confidence grows.

Your brain releases feel-good neurotransmitters that help improve mood, reduce stress and increase resilience.

You feel more positive.

More capable.

Less overwhelmed by life's challenges.

The physical benefits are incredible, but the mental and emotional benefits are just as powerful.

We Can All Find 10 Minutes

That's exactly why I've created a brand-new Resistance Band Series this week. FREE for the members of Lift4Life.

These short 10-minute sessions use simple resistance bands to build strength, support bone health and maintain muscle mass.

They're quick, effective and designed for real life.

Going on holiday?

Throw a band in your suitcase.

Travelling for work?

Pack a band in your laptop bag.

Busy summer schedule?

Ten minutes is still ten minutes.

The question isn't usually whether we have time.

It's what we're prioritising.

Ten minutes scrolling social media?

Or ten minutes investing in your health?

You get to choose.

Start Where You Are

If you're not ready to join a membership or commit to hour long classes, that's absolutely fine.

The important thing is that you start. If you'd like me to support you, my Summer Fit Package is available now and gives you lifetime access to five downloadable bodyweight workouts, all 15 minutes or less.

Modifications are shared so you can build up at your own pace.
