🏋🏻♀️The Two-Hour Secret to Living Longer
Jo Steele | JUN 4
If I told you that just two hours a week could help you stay stronger, more independent and potentially live longer, would you make the time?
Recent research suggests that around 90–120 minutes of strength training per week may be one of the most effective forms of exercise for supporting longevity and healthy ageing. The greatest benefits were seen when strength training was combined with regular aerobic activity such as walking, running, cycling or swimming.
The message is simple:
Getting older is inevitable. How we age is something we can influence.
For years, many of us have been encouraged to focus on getting smaller. To eat less, weigh less and take up less space.
But as we move through midlife and beyond, the goal needs to change.
Instead of asking, "How can I lose weight?"
Perhaps we should be asking, "How can I stay strong enough to live the life I want?"
From our thirties onwards, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass. For women, this process accelerates during perimenopause and menopause as oestrogen levels decline. Bone density also decreases, increasing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
Without strength training, everyday activities we have always taken for granted gradually become harder:
Carrying shopping bags
Climbing stairs
Lifting grandchildren
Getting up from the floor
Maintaining balance and preventing falls
Strength training helps protect against these age-related changes by preserving muscle, supporting bone health, improving balance and helping us remain active and independent for longer.
And that's not all.
Research continues to show links between strength training and improved heart health, better metabolic health, enhanced mood, improved confidence and a reduced risk of premature death.
The real benefit of strength training isn't what happens in the gym. It's what happens outside of it.
☀️It's having the energy to enjoy holidays without feeling exhausted.
🧳It's confidently carrying your luggage through an airport.
🚶🏻➡️It's walking up a hill without worrying whether you'll make it.
⛹🏻It's playing with your children or grandchildren without needing to sit down after five minutes.
😁It's knowing that your body can support the life you want to live.
Strength gives you choices.
Strength gives you confidence.
Strength gives you freedom.
You don't need to spend hours in the gym every day.
The research suggests that around two strength sessions per week can make a meaningful difference.
Consistency beats perfection.
A little done regularly is far more powerful than occasional bursts of motivation.
